About Propel Cornwall
Propel Cornwall has received European Regional Development Funding (ERDF) to ensure local marine SMEs can benefit from a business support project that specifically targets the market of 707 Marine SMEs working across the Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership area. So it’s not just limited to Cornwall Marine Network’s existing membership of 348 SME businesses.
Local marine SME’s already employ 12,500 people across 707 SME businesses, generating £345 million to the GDP of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. SMEs represent 99% of all local marine businesses, and Cornwall represents 1 in 7 of the UK’s Marine sector business base, so they are economically very important and need supporting.
Propel Cornwall aims to support those businesses to improve their skills, productivity and outputs, as well as the sector and industry as a whole to remain a leading exponent of marine knowledge and skills in the world. This is being led by our Marine Innovation Mentors
Propel Cornwall is an initiative of Cornwall Marine Network, a private not-for-profit company owned by 351 local marine businesses in Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly. Our 28-strong team only exists to support improvements to the economic prosperity of the marine industry. Most of our support to the mainly SME industry is skills and training related and we have a track record without parallel in the UK marine sector, having enabled the creation of more than 3,000 new jobs in less than 12 years, including 1,200 new Apprenticeships through our subsidiary, the Cornwall Apprenticeship Agency. We are now the largest employer-owned marine cluster in the UK.
As a County we are rightly proud of our marine heritage with our expertise and processes being adopted in many businesses around the globe and as an industry, we continue to grow. Cornwall remains home to some of the most innovative, cutting edge and forward thinking marine businesses.
